An Afternoon with the Wyeths

I spent yesterday afternoon browsing the Wyeth exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. I’ve always admired Andrew Wyeth’s work but was unfamiliar with that of his son, Jamie. Having been trained by his own father, Andrew Wyeth went on to train Jamie, so it is no surprise there are similarities in their styles. I took the auditory tour as I do like to hear the back story of certain pieces of art. This particular tour was a delight as there was quite a bit of audio commentary by the artists themselves thus giving a glimpse into their lives and their thinking at the time a particular piece was created.

From Jamie’s pet pig, Den Den, to Andrew’s stunning nude studies late in his career, this exhibit was a feast to the senses. I was not wrong when I stated that Western Ohio – Eastern Indiana made me feel I was walking through an Andrew Wyeth painting, even though both artists painted in Pennsylvania and the rocky coast of Maine.

Whenever I come out of an art exhibit, play, opera, musical, concert, or symphony, I walk with a different step…a new perspective, a renewed sense of purpose, an urgency to create some sort of legacy of my own. This always changes something deep within me…a paradigm shift. If you have the opportunity, I would definitely recommend a trip to your nearest art museum or gallery this weekend. Give your brain some soul food and devour some art.
