Emerging from the Silence

I have a dear sister/friend who sends me songs through Messenger every once in a while. She and I actually met in choir and music has been much more a part of who she is than it has been for me. For years, I couldn’t drive without blasting the musing and singing at the top of my lungs. Mr. Virgo and I had CDs we had burned with “road trip music” in the days before MP3 players. To this day, when I hear “Hotel California” and “Go Your Own Way” it takes me back to a highway in Arizona that looked all the world like an old western movie.

Then…Mr. Virgo died and my world went dark and colorless and silent. Eventually the color came back and the light shines, but I’ve never really enjoyed music like I used to. Oh, I still love to go to live music, but I’m talking about turning on music while I’m working around the house or driving on road trips. I have learned to love the silence and the hours of meditation driving without noise provides me.

My friend sent me a recording of Matteo Bocelli singing SOLO. He is Andre Bocelli’s son. It was ok but didn’t know my socks off. All week, Mr. FixIt and I had been looking forward to Adele’s special…”One Night Only” on TV. It aired last night after 60 Minutes. Oh, my gosh! She was amazing!!! I didn’t realize how much I’d missed her. She hasn’t performed in six years and she had stories to tell.

When we go through the battles of life, we all have stories to tell about it. Adele’s stories hit such a spot in my soul last night. From her largely absent alcoholic father to the deep pain and soul searching that came from her divorce, I could relate to it all. It was so fun to see the faces of the celebrities in the audience as they were reduced to normal citizen status…dancing and singing and looking on with frank awe on their faces.

I don’t know if it will inspire me to listen to more music or not. It might. I doubt I’ll drive with music on. I’m older and need to concentrate. But listening to Adele and the stories her music tells was so refreshing last night and I deeply enjoyed it. I hope you got a chance to see it as well.
