It’s always a sad, sad day when we have to say goodbye to the beach. Even though our week started out pretty rocky with a strong gale, lots of rain, and unseasonably cool weather…we ended on a high note yesterday! We spent the day out on the beach with plenty of sunscreen and still got sunburned. Mr. FixIt fished his little heart out, loving the new rod and reel I got him for his birthday.
He didn’t catch a thing. Not even a nibble. Yet a fellow just a few yards from him was pulling fish in left and right. His last catch of the day was a very respectable Black Drum that any angler would have been proud to hook on a line. It turned out he was using blood worms for bait and Mr. FixIt was using his standby…squid. Maybe next year he’ll try something different.
I took my knitting and enjoyed the sun and surf. I watched a pod of dolphins rising along the shore. Osprey, pelicans and laughing gulls kept the skies above the beach busy. There was a ton of people-watching to do. Mr. FixIt always wears a WV hat and folks invariably stop to chat about their connection to the Mountain State. The wind picked up as the afternoon wore on and I eventually caved and put on my jacket and draped my sweater over my knees. We finally…reluctantly…pulled ourselves away around 4:30 and headed back to the condo for a brief rest.
We caught the last sunset of our stay. As we walked back to the truck, I noticed patches of Stemless Evening Primrose scattered in the coarse, sandy soil…their delicate yellow blossoms opened for such a brief time. We came back to the condo and cleaned and packed so we could get an early start this morning. We’re thinking we might get to stop at our favorite pancake house on the way out of town.
I want to thank you for coming along with us on this fun week at the beach. I’ll be doing the first half of the driving then Mr. FixIt will take over and I can knit the rest of the way home. We’ll be back to the regular programming tomorrow and the mowing, gardening, and cleaning cycle begins anew.
Prayers for travel mercies. See you tomorrow from Wild, Wonderful West Virginia!
