On to the Next Project!

My Uncle Bud gave me the 1/2 gallon Ball jar and the other two I’ve picked up along the way. One of the quart jars is a #13. They are rare because moonshiners broke them. They were considered bad luck.

The sweater is finished…all but sewing on the buttons down the front. The sleeves are the perfect length. It’s soft and warm and not at all itchy. I’m still not sure if it’s mine or if it’s a gift. We shall see.

I finally got the beans cooked. I got the smoked ham hocks out of the fridge to put in the cooking pot with the beans and they had mold on them! I was really disappointed, but I also had a package of ham bits and slices for cooking so I put a good couple of handfuls in the slow cooker along with an onion, quartered, and a generous amount of black pepper. Before we had time to eat them, Mr. FixIt decided he was going to go to town and sit with the guys at the bowling alley and visit. He misses bowling with his buddies so he was excited to go shoot the breeze for a little while. I packaged up the beans and we’ll heat some up tomorrow along with a cast iron skillet full of crusty cornbread for supper.

A yummy pot of soup beans and ham. I’ll bake up some crusty cornbread in my favorite iron skillet later on today. That’s good eatin’ right there!

I actually did laundry yesterday. I hate doing laundry in our washer/dryer. The washer is billed as “high efficiency” that’s supposed to use less water and doesn’t have an agitator. It doesn’t do a full load and I cant see how that is any more efficient than doing half the number of wash loads in a regular washer. I get really frustrated with it because there’s always soap scum left on the clothes and I end up running them through an extra rinse cycle. So, usually Mr. FixIt does the laundry. But, yesterday I decided to give it another go and, while it really wasn’t any better than my first attempts, I stuck it out and got most of it done.

When Mr. FixIt left, I decided to run to town to Walmart and pick up some sewing notions. It’s been a gazillion years since I’ve had a sewing machine that worked and when I downsized, most of my supplies were stolen when the storage unit was broken into. I’m kind of starting from scratch. I needed a cutting mat with a rotary cutter and ruler and a small ironing board to keep beside me as I sew. I bought a carry case for the sewing machine, but when I got home, I think it’s too small so I’ll return it next time it go to town. I needed thread and quilting pins and machine oil for the sewing machine. Today I can set up my temporary sewing nook since we aren’t ready to fix up a more permanent sewing/craft/office space for me yet. There’s always some other project that takes precedence. Maybe we’ll get to that in the coming year.

We need to get out to the farm this week and prime the pump. And we’re hoping to have a family gathering over the Labor Day weekend so there’s planning that will go into that. The grass is still growing so there’s not slacking off the mowing at this time of year. I’m so grateful to have had a slow, laidback weekend. I’m ready to hit the ground running today and get some things accomplished!

“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.”

Philippians 2:14-16 ESV
