Taking a break for a s’more!
Friday night was the first night I’ve slept in the house in a month. Our little home on wheels has beckoned me to “camp” in our field under a canopy of stars…even when the temperatures hovered near freezing. The only time I can talk Mr. FixIt into sleeping in the camper with me is when we are actually…you know…CAMPING. At a campground. I don’t blame him. He has a bad back and the mattress in the camper is brutal. However, now he has no excuse!
The new mattress is here!
After opening up the box and following the directions to allow the mattress to open up and restore its original shape, we had to leave it alone for 24 hours. I went out yesterday to dress the bed and clean the camper to get it ready for the last few days we’ll have the chance to sleep out here. Mr. FixIt promised he would come out here to sleep last night. It will give him a chance to try out the new mattress and see what he thinks of it.
It was sunny and warm yesterday. After I got the camper cleaned up, I stretched out on the bed to try out the mattress myself. I think I’m going to like it! The sun was shining in the big curbside window and it was so warm and cozy in there. I was just about to doze off when Mr. FixIt called and wanted to know if I’d like to go out for pizza. Oh, heck yeah! I love when he “asks me out.” One should never stop dating their life partner. I want him to always know I’d choose him over and over and over again and he feels the same way.
We went for a little detour on our way home and caught some great views. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of traffic on that little two-lane because of a Harvest Festival at the fair grounds so I couldn’t really stop to take pictures save for this beautiful white-faced bull. If we’d had jackets with us, we might have stopped to see what was going on at the fairgrounds, but it was getting pretty chilly. We came home instead.
We saw this big handsome fella while we were driving out the backroads last evening.
As I was laying here writing this, a lovely barred owl started calling in the sycamore trees along the hedgerow. I love their vocalizations.
“Who-cooks-for-you? Who-cooks-for-yooooooou?”
The other night we were driving home and a whippoorwill flew right out in front of me. I was so sure I hit it and it just made me sick. They are becoming more and more rare in our area. It saddened me to think I may have hurt it.
I saw a “wooly worm” in the field yesterday afternoon. Old wives tales say their coloration predicts the severity of the winter ahead. Allegedly, the more black there is, the worse the winter is supposed to be. This little guy said “Winter will come in like a lion and out like a lamb.” At the same time, the same variety of caterpillar told my friend (just 20 miles away) it would be a harsh winter because the coat was solid black.
There are some “old wive’s tails” I totally believe in. For instance, if you see the underside of the leaves showing on a hot summer afternoon, you should get ready for rain because it’s on its way. That’s science…heat rises and when moist heat rises sharply, thunderstorms and rain develop. But wooly worms? Yeah…the jury’s still out on that.
Tractor Supply had some beautiful mums on sale!
Mr. FixIt bowls tonight. I’ll take the camper up today to empty the tanks, then I can winterize it. I told my sweetie I’ll go out to the farm to mow sometime this week and I’ll stay for a couple of days. Hunting season is coming soon so there will be people in and out of there and I won’t get a chance to stay again for a while.
