We waited till the dew was off the grass then I went out and finished mowing here at Marshmallow Ranch. Mr. FixIt got the tiller out of the pole building and dug up the area along the fence and planted the Elephant Ear bulbs. Those things multiply every year so we always have more than we planted the year before. Maybe I’ll throw the container in the trunk of the car today with a handful of bags and give them away after the bridal shower for our eldest granddaughter.
Mowing at Marshmallow Ranch…look at that sky!
We took a break to eat lunch, then headed to The Farm to mow. The grass everywhere has grown like crazy with all that rain then a sudden warmup. When you ran over it with the mower, it kind of mashed the grass down. Then you’d go around a couple of times and it almost looked like you hadn’t mowed there. I ran over a water snake without realizing it. Mr. FixIt motioned for me to come over and look. To him, every snake is a “copperhead, more than likely.” Bless his heart. As best I could tell it was a water snake. I finally got the tractor mowing finished and helped Mr. FixIt by doing the last of the push mowing. Then we were really done for the day.

It was 6:45 when we got to the intersection to turn left and head back home. About 5-6 miles in the other direction, there’s a little gas station and country restaurant. Mr. FixIt suggested we turn right and let someone else fix our supper since we worked so hard. Let me tell you…distance is a tricky thing here in WV. Five to six miles in Colorado is a hop, skip, and jump. Here? It takes three times as long to get anywhere because of the curvy roads.
My $5 find…a McCoy planter in the sweetest blue with a quilted pattern.
We got to the restaurant just fifteen minutes before they closed. The grill had been shut off, but there were still several menu choices. Mr. FixIt had a hotdog and a bowl of potato soup. I had a chef salad. It tasted pretty darned good after all that hard work and I didn’t have to do the dishes afterwards. As we waited for our food, we wandered around the little restaurant. Sometimes local people stop in with some antiques and the owner sells them. There was a beautiful yellow crock with a blue stripe that I very nearly bought, but really…how many crocks do I really need? However, there was the most darling little McCoy planter in a light blue color that I just had to take home with me. And…if was only $5.00!!! Score! I’ve decided to buy an African Violet like my grandmother used to grow and see if I’m any good at it.
As we were sitting in the booth chatting, a woman sitting on the other side of the restaurant called out to me.
“Aren’t you Ginny?”
I still can’t believe it when people recognize me…especially ten miles from nowhere.
“Yes, I am!”
There there was that couple of minutes of small talk catching up with what we’ve each been up to, when I had to ask that question that I seem to ask more and more these days.
“Please forgive me. I know we’ve met, but can you refresh my memory as to how and when?”
After all…there’s one of me. There are going on 6,500 of you all.
“I’m Jean _________. You spoke at our church a few years ago.”
Suddenly I totally remembered the night in question and I remember speaking with her that evening. Just a sweet, sweet gal. It still humbles me when people know me and I really appreciate it when they stop. And say hello.
Lots of people traveling on a Friday evening.
On our way home, we marveled at the gorgeous sky and I had to pull over at the top of the hill to take a few pictures. By the time we got home, we were both ready to put our feet up for a while. Mr. FixIt is much like Mr. Virgo…the TV is their martini. Not me! I gave him a big kiss and headed to the quiet seclusion of the camper…the she-shed…the playhouse. One of my happy places. The other is the farm and since our internet has been totally erratic the last few days, I’m going to head back out to The Farm tomorrow after the bridal shower and stay a few days so I can get some designing done. Mr. FixIt will come out Monday with some tools and we’ll fix the pump on the well again.
Well, I sure picked the wrong spot to sit down yesterday. Did I mention I’m on my final weight loss journey? In my defense…the old picnic table is rotten and needs to be dismantled and sent to the brush pile.
It was a busy, fun, and productive day and we both knew we would sleep like a baby! I’m really looking forward to the bridal shower today. The kids posted a picture of them in front of the courthouse where they got their marriage license yesterday! It’s getting real!
