Practicing Husbandry

I’ve really enjoyed my stay out here at the farm. I told Mr. FixIt last night, I didn’t realize how worn out I was. While I did get some work done on the computer, what I really did the most was soak this place up like a sponge. I did a lot of porch sitting and bird watching and listening to the whispers of the past. It was restorative in a way no place can give me. And now I’m ready to go home and get back to work.

I always sleep really well at the farm and this trip was no different. However, a mama cardinal has taken up residency in the Carolina Spice Bush right outside the bedroom window. At 4:30 yesterday morning, she decided to regale me with the song of her people. There wasn’t even a glimmer of light out there, but she was ready to rock and roll. I decided to wear earplugs last night.

There is also a cardinal nesting in the big Rhododendron in the front year. I think there’s a robin in there, too. I don’t want to get close enough to look at the nest because I don’t want to disturb them. I did work outside a good deal yesterday afternoon. I took the loppers to the grassy area between the monster cherry tree and the barn. It was beginning to feel like you were in a cave going up there and that keeps it dark and wet. When the ground stays wet, there’s no place for water to drain and the ground gets soft and mushy and it adds to the humidity in the summer which isn’t good for the wood buildings. I don’t get a whole lot done, but it sure looked more open when I was done. Husbandry does not just involve animals. It also involved the management of the resources around you.

I need to strip the bed this morning and wash the sheets before I pack up and head home. I timed the trip out here perfectly…I’m almost out of food. Just enough for breakfast this morning. I haven’t been able to weigh myself here so I’m really looking forward to seeing how much I’ve lost since Saturday morning. I went for long walks while I was here. That’s one thing I just wasn’t doing over the winter. I went sedentary as soon as the weather got cold. I just can’t continue to do that.

I’m feeling better every day! More energy…more motivation…more hope!

“Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.”

Psalms 96:11-12 NIV

A sneak peek at what I worked on this week. I stumbled upon the soul-soothing comfort of fuzzy blankies in my camper when I was a new widow. I was given a beautiful comfort quilt with a Scripture on it, but the texture of the fabric wasn’t comforting to me. So, I’ve designed warm fuzzies with Scriptures on them. Look for them in the shop this week.
