A Day is Never Wasted

So warm and cozy!!! New boots/slippers.

Whether your day is jam packed with chores or you accomplish absolutely nothing… it’s never really wasted. Your busy day got you farther along on your to-do list. But your absolutely nothing day is sure to have nuggets of gold tucked inside. Self care can be absolutely necessary, especially during the busy holiday season.

I didn’t feel like I accomplished much yesterday. I went to the Catholic Church and knitted with the girls. They were making such cute things. One is making little faceless doll babies to send overseas with a charity. Another was crocheting scrubbies on wooden spoons. Those would make great stocking stuffers or tucked in a kitchen gift basket. One found a WIP (work in progress) in her stash and she brought it with her. She and her niece sat together to figure out what it was supposed to be and they decided it was a hat. It was such a beautiful color… like a rich caramel. The other two gals were working with a big bulky yarn… one on a round loom and one knitting. I worked on a hat I’m knitting for a gift.

I went home and cleaned the kitchen from all that cooking then boxed up Mr. FixIt’s wedding ring to send in for repair. It turns out I needed to take it to town to the UPS Store so I grabbed Mr. FixIt and off we went. We had to hang out a little till the UPS Store opened so we went to Kohl’s and walked around. I found a pair of booties that I can wear for slippers and what a deal! They were regularly $49.99 but with the sale, and an extra coupon, I got them for $16! We grabbed Chinese food on the way home and it was a busy and productive day. But the best part happened first thing.

As I heated up the water for my coffee, I received a notification from someone very dear to me. I don’t know if you remember, but one of my favorite cousins on my dad’s side of the family died a few years ago from an incurable disease. He was my first crush. I was a little girl when he went off to the Navy. I so greatly remember him in his Navy Whites when he came home looking so handsome. His girlfriend was the sweetest person in the world and I was so enamored of them in their late teens/early twenties, riding around and listening to Elvis. It was a heady time for me and I loved them both dearly.

I did my best to help and support his wife….during his long illness and after his death. I provided a listening ear and a shoulder when needed. As time passed, she became more involved in her church and found new friends. I could hear in her voice that she was building this new life for herself. She built a new house. She found her sparkle. But she was absolutely certain she would never find another love…couldn’t even fathom the possibility. Then…

The phone rang.

It was a widower she had met from a neighboring church. He had received an invitation to a fancy dinner and it was addressed to him… “and Guest.” The only person he could think of was her. Would she like to go? It didn’t take long and she said yes. I’m thrilled beyond belief for her. It CAN happen. I know it doesn’t for everyone. Many aren’t interested. And that’s ok, too. That really was the high point of my day.

It was a good day. Love always wins…in one way or another.
