Craving the Sun

“Late Winter Sun”

We are having a warming trend here in West Virginia. The monsoonal rains are beginning and we will have long stretches of grey, rainy days in the next few weeks. Still, the night time temperatures drop and we awoke to a skiff of snow and icy roads yesterday. After totaling my truck this time last year, I am really skittish about driving on dicey roads so I’ve been hanging out at Mr. FixIt’s place while he goes to town for physical therapy on his hand.

Yesterday was really sunny but with a high of only 41 degrees. The back door faces west and the sun was streaming in so I pulled my recliner over and soaked up some rays. OMGosh! It felt divine. An hour sitting in the warm sunshine did wonders to boost my mood and got me thinking about getting outside camping, hiking, fishing. This is the week of the Sisters on the Fly Great Winter Camp In. We are supposed to capture pictures of ourselves doing anything camping related. I’m going to get out in the camper this week…even if it’s just for a few hours to write. I really miss TOW-Wanda by this time of the year.

It’s almost time to start working on fixing up my 1967 Franklin Camper. I would love to have it ready this year to camp in. As I sit here writing this, a pair of cardinals are at the feeder in the back yard. I’m hearing more birds in the mornings. The pile of firewood is stacked by the fire ring ready for coming evening gatherings. The pool is still iced over. But the days are getting longer and with warmer weather and rain comes the promise of spring. I can hardly wait! ❤️

“Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”
‭‭Hosea‬ ‭6:3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  1. I spent some time sitting in my recliner enjoying the sun yesterday, as well! It wa so comforting. Thank you God for the moment I spent in your light!

  2. Thank you for your candor. I am in the process of letting go of my husband of 46 years. I know we only have a few more months before I become a widow. I don’t know what awaits me but the lure of the road simmers in the back of my mind. Perhaps it is just the desire to run away from my stress and grief, but finding girls on the fly and reading your post gave me a glimmer that the future will be possible. I don’t have a camper, but I was considering a class b van. Is it possible to be a sister without the cute retro camper? Regardless, your post was a gift. Thank you.

    1. First, let me tell you my heart is with you. I cannot imagine what you are going through. Mr. Virgo’s death was sudden so there was no long goodbye.

As for Sisters on the Fly…you do not have to have one of those cute little dolled-up campers. Anything will do. I pull a 30’ travel trailer and sometimes I sleep in a tent. It just depends on the even. You don’t even have to have anything. Some gals sleep in cabins, lodges, or nearby hotels or B&B’s. The important thing is surrounding yourself with wonderful, supportive women. The Sisters and the Girl Campers really saved me after I lost my husband. They showed me that he died…I did not. So li lived. ❤️
