Hotter Than a Firecracker

El Jebel Fire
“El Jebel, Colorado burns in the night.”

“Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭19:18‬ ‭ESV‬

Colorado is on fire…and not in a good way. There are fires everywhere here. This picture shows the little town of El Jebel, not too far from where I worked. The building in front is the Whole Foods Grocery. It makes me so sad to see this. This particular fire started when two guys were shooting tracers at the firing range and caught the brittle, dry brush on fire. Colorado had a drastically low snowfall this year and record low rainfall this spring. It is literally a tinder box right now and anything can cause a fire that will quickly rage out of control.

I’ve lived through two terrible fires here. The first was the Storm King Fire. It started as a lonesome little pine tree that was struck by lightning one afternoon and smoldered for a couple of days before a dry, hot wind fanned it into flames. The resulting conflagration took the lives of 14 smokejumpers from Oregon. The other was the Coal Seam Fire that looked much like this picture. I was driving from Glenwood Springs to New Castle the day it blew up and jumped the interstate AND the Colorado River in an arc right over my car. I was the last car that came through before they closed the road. I remember standing in the street in front of my house, looking at the hillside several miles away in the middle of the night. It looked like a thousand campfires.

If you live in the mountains here, you don’t wonder IF you’re going to have a fire. You wonder WHEN you are going to have a fire. My friends have been posting on Facebook about the stress of keeping a bug out bag by the door for a quick escape. I remember wondering…”What would I grab? What is the most important?” I have always kept my most important papers in a file box with a handle that I could keep near the door and grab on my way out.

Yes, this fire was man made. As is the one in the southern part of the state that is nearing 100,000 acres. But, as a friend of mine pointed out, we have been starting fires for over 10,000 years. There is a natural cycle of forest management that includes fire. As a matter of fact, there are certain evergreen trees that will not release the seeds from their pine cones unless they are exposed to the high temperatures that a fire would produce, which goes to show me fire is part of the grander scheme of things. It is human intrusion that has placed us in the way of the inevitable.

I’m hanging out here in Denver for a couple more days to acclimate to the altitude before I head up into the mountains to see my brother. Please pray for rain…and for the firefighters and homeowners…we are so desperately dry here. ❤

  1. We lived in Glenwood Springs at the time of Coal Seam fire. Our subdivision was place on evacuation alert. We packed our van with things we didn’t want to lose, important papers, pictures, my mother quilts(that she hand quilted), rocking horses that Greg’s dad had made. Things that couldn’t be replaced. The day it got close to Glenwood, we had driven to Ami’s Acres to watch the fire on the other mountain. We were standing with the fire dept when the fire jumped the river and the interstate. Boy, did they jump into action and we drove away. Have a good time in Colorado.

  2. Any updated info on the painting “I Have Found the One Whom My Soul Loveth” by the Egyptian artist? I am SOOOOO interested in getting a print of it. I have loved that picture since the first time I laid eyes on it.

    1. Yes! I recently found out he has a printer in the states. You can order your copy of the painting on the artist’s studio Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/GoldenEarth1/ It may take some time to hear back as he works full time. Please keep in mind that English is Kerolos’ second language and it presents challenges for him. Thank you for supporting the artist! ❤️
