A Beautiful Day

I can live through the darkest of winters. Especially when God gifts us a day like yesterday. As a matter of fact, we’ve had a lot of sunny days the last two or three weeks. The sun was shining brightly yesterday and big puffy clouds drifted across a sky the color of a fine piece of Wedgewood. It was so delicious you could almost taste spring.

My dear friend Gail sent me a screenshot of a spinning wheel she’s been wanting forever and wondered how close I lived to the seller. Turns out, it was just 20 miles away so with a few texts back and forth, we made the arrangements for me to pick it up. Since yesterday was a stellar pre-spring sun-fest, Mr. FixIt and I decided to drive down to pick up Gail’s treasure and go the long way around.

The seller’s name was Cathy. Gail found her on Marketplace and didn’t know her from Adam, however…they have a mutual friend. Cathy is as sweet as honey. When we arrived in her small town, I called her and she talked me to her with turn-by-turn directions. The place where we parked was on an incline and I was struggling with the door and trying to get the money out of my purse. She ran to hold the door for me.

When I finally got out of the car, she held out two big bags of apples.

“You like apples?” She asked, her smile as radiant as the day itself.

“Sure! Who doesn’t like apples?” I smiled back.

“Well, my husband drives a tow truck and he ran on a call this weekend. A tractor trailer rolled on a highway in Ohio. It was packed full of apples and that company said to just throw them away! My husband said not on his watch so he packed up as many as he could carry and brought them home. I called my girlfriend and we went to work and we’re giving everyone we know some of these beautiful apples!”

Who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth? I gladly took the apples and I’ll bake some pies with them. We loaded up the spinning wheel and headed home. People are good, y’all. They’re out here being selfless and doing good things and helping others. The Good Lord brought us an abundance of sunshine yesterday…from the sky, and from a sweet lady named Cathy. We drove off, hand in hand, feeling really good about the day and thanked God for the blessings.

Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends!

“Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer. Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes!”
