A Bumper Crop of Babies!

I was just telling Mr. FixIt the other day that I hadn’t seen any fawns this year. He said not to worry…they’d be showing up soon. After supper last night, he suggested we are a walk down around the pollinators and see what’s happening. We were just stepping out of the gate and saw THREE babies right by the camper. I quietly walked around the end of the camper when I was standing just a few yards from the closest one. That little thing started bleating and ran straight for me!

One thing you don’t want to do is interfere with wildlife babies. Deer will often leave their babies on their own for long stretches while they go foraging. Many people have “rescued” babies who weren’t really abandoned, thus breaking the laws of nature. I immediately started talking to her and made myself really big to let her know she shouldn’t come any closer. Her two siblings were less inclined to come close and soon she figured out it was better to go off with them in the woods. I’ll keep an eye out for them. We live on a very busy two-lane blacktop and unfortunately, deer get killed on this road frequently. We walked on down around the pollinator gardens till we noticed one of the babies had taken shelter amongst the tall grasses so we skirted around and came back up the other way.

As we walked through the front year, we checked out the pear trees. One of them got bit by Jack Frost and hardly has any fruit set on, but the other one is fully loaded. We should have a big crop this year, but I’m not quite sure when they will be ripe. We’ll be gone till August 6th so we may miss them. Hopefully one of the kids can come get them and use them if they ripen while we are gone.

I cleaned the pool again yesterday and it is getting sparkling clear. After I was done vacuuming and brushing the bottom, I did thirty minutes of stretching and water aerobics to get a little activity in my day. We stayed in during the heat of the afternoon…Mr. FixIt watching his shows and I was reading some of the cookbooks I bought Thursday at the junk shop. I also balanced my bank account, searched for the best price on tires for the camper and a chlorine dispenser for the pool. Mr. FixIt designed a set of stairs on his CAD program for a friend and I helped him navigate the printer. It’s kind of tricky.

As I was cleaning the pool, I got to thinking about supper and decided I’d really like to make macaroni and hamburger. I’ve heard it called goulash, slumgullion, beefy mac…but whatever you call it, it’s really good. I’ll bet I haven’t made that since I was in my twenties! I searched my pantry over for canned tomatoes. I was SUREI had picked up a case at Sam’s not too long ago, but they were nowhere to be found so I used a jar of pizza sauce. It tasted fine. When I was putting the pasta canister away, I happened to glance up at the top shelf of the pantry and there were my tomatoes! Ah, well…no harm, no foul, right?

I brought one of the cookbooks out to the camper with me last night to read in the peaceful cool of the evening. The Church Supper Cookbook from Families and Churches Across the Country. I’m betting there are some greats recipes in there!

I hope you are staying cool and hydrated and that you have a wonderful summer weekend planned!
