A Day in Hatteras

Argosy in Hatteras
“Sweet little Argosy!”

Our last full day on the OBX is in the books and what a beautiful day it was! The day dawned overcast but warm. By the time we were up and had breakfast made, the clouds were gone and there was abundant sunshine. It was looking like a perfect day for what we had planned.

We headed south for Buxton to see the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Unfortunately, it was closed for climbing just after Columbus Day so we didn’t get to go inside. But we walked the beach and visited the site where the ashes of Mr. FixIt’s son-in-law were spread in August. We didn’t stay long because that sunshine was just a bit deceiving. The wind had a definite bite to it and my sweetheart didn’t bring a jacket.

Yarn
“Is there such a thing as TOO MUCH YARN?”

My new hubby knows the things I love. He took me to a house that had the cutest camper in front of it. I’m glad there wasn’t any traffic because he stopped right in front so I could take a picture. He also knows when there is a yarn shop, you look for the nearest parking spot. Such a good man!

I love when I meet someone and I instantly know they’re special…someone I want to keep in touch with. That was Jenn Johnson. She has the sweetest little shop in Hatteras. Blue Pelican is a gallery and gift shop with a generous portion dedicated to yarn. When you walk in the shop, you are instantly bombarded with great splashes of color. Large windows let the North Carolina sun in and light is reflected from the many displays of handcrafted jewelry and art objects. Then…Mr. FixIt said, “Baby, wait till you see this!” He had just stuck his head in the yarn room.

This place was eye candy. There was a lot of yarn packed into a small area and I could have spent a lot more time in there. Everywhere you looked, the colors and textures invited you to come in and play. Samples screamed, “Touch me!” I couldn’t get enough. And, since you can’t get enough yarn, I bought two more skeins for socks. Ok…I’m done. No more yarn till this is knitted up. (Please don’t hold me to that!)

The week is over and we pack up to head home today. I was telling Mr. FixIt, when you first get to the beach, the week stretches out in front of you. And, when the last day comes, you wonder where the time went. We are well rested and happy as a pair of speckled pups. So, home we go. Let the adventures continue! ❤️

  1. Ginny, my favorite OBX memory is coming to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1969 with my parents and 5 siblings. Dad pulled up to the lighthouse in its original location. The parking lot was empty and the lighthouse door was open. We kids tumbled out of the car with Mom and began racing up the steps. Mom was just 39 and almost faster than we were!

Unfortunately, Mom looked down the spiral about halfway up the steps and couldn’t go on. One of my sisters and I literally walked her to a little bench along the stairs, deserted her there, and joined with the rest of the siblings, running around the fenced outer top part and yelling into the wind to our Dad standing by the car far below.

When we got tired of running in circles and screaming at the top of our lungs, we raced back down the spiral stairs. Two of us snagged Mom on the way down and got her back outside eventually.

It’s one of my favorite family memories! Mom used to collect different items with the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which went to my nephew, Stephen, after her passing. We still talk about how fast she raced up the spiral stairs, at least for awhile. Plus, we had the lighthouse all to ourselves! That would never happen today.

Safe travels coming home from your honeymoon! I know you’ll miss the ocean, but your bed is going to feel so good tonight! ❤️
