A Self-Care Day

I don’t take off and go to town by myself as much as I used to. So, when I had a coffee scheduled with my gal-pals from high school, I took advantage of the occasion and made a day of it. There were eight of us at coffee and it was so good to get to see each one of them. We missed the ones who couldn’t be with us, but a good time was had by all who attended.

We used to meet at the Blennerhassett Hotel in downtown Parkersburg, but the hotel went through a major renovation a couple of years ago and the space we used to meet in was converted to more tables for the restaurant. It’s a real shame because I so love that historic hotel. The ambience is rich and decadent and makes you feel like Queen for the Day.

Instead, we gather in the meeting room of a local coffee shop. The room is a glassed in sunroom with a table that easily seats twelve. That is usually plenty of room for us, even though the menu is a tad pricey. I had a Steamer, which is nothing more than the steamed milk of your choice. I only drink almond milk now but for some reason, I decided to try soy. I really didn’t like it. And at $5, I think I’ll just order hot water next time. Or, maybe we’ll find another place for variety.

We always find someone in the shop to take a group photo before people start leaving. Once the photo was taken, we started saying out goodbyes. Some of the gals decided to go over to “The Blenny” to see the trees on display so I tagged along. Different companies sponsor trees and the talents of the Mid Ohio Valley come out in a big way. Then, after the trees have been up for a couple of weeks, they are auctioned off for charity. I really enjoyed going with Sue and Brenda and Emily.

Once we parted ways, I headed out to do a little shopping. We won’t be having the family Thanksgiving at our house this year. Our family Thanksgiving dinner will be at the Former Mrs. FixIt’s house on Sunday. One can’t have enough turkey at this time of year, and Mr. FixIt LOVES his turkey. I went to Sam’s and they didn’t have fresh turkeys. I’ve always had good luck with the turkeys at Walmart so I bought a little ten pound bird and some of the trimmings. That will satisfy my sweetheart and we’ll have plenty of leftovers.

One of the things I always get at Sam’s is their ground turkey. I love to make my own turkey sausage with it. I mix two pounds of the ground turkey and add the sausage seasoning I buy at the Pig. I don’t think I added quite enough last time so I’m hoping this time it will be a little spicier. I fry the patties till they are almost done, then I package them with my vacuum Food Saver in servings of two and freeze them. Then, when I’m ready to make a hearty breakfast, all I have to do is pop the frozen packet in hot water and boil them. That finishes cooking the patties and they’re ready in about fifteen or twenty minutes.

We’ll watch church online this morning, then enjoy each other’s company and watch football. I can knit and relax before the busyness of the week takes over. I hope your holiday plans include some self-care, too. You deserve it!
