Cajun Food and a Tornado

I got up early yesterday to meet my high school girlfriends for coffee. There were only seven of us. It’s still a busy time so I’m sure more will come in the fall. The first three of us to arrive were widowed…ten years, five years, and one year. Another was supposed to come, but something came up and she had to cancel. I can’t speak for her, but at two months, there were a LOT of things I cancelled because I just wasn’t up for it. In fact, when I was at two months, I was trying my hardest to get lost in the wilderness and backroads of Colorado.

I stopped to pick up one of the gals who can’t drive these days because her vision is so bad. She offered to pay me for gas and I said that wasn’t necessary. Then she offered to pay for my coffee. I told her, this was a blessing for me…surely she wouldn’t rob me of my blessing! We smiled at each other. She lost her husband five years ago and still can’t talk about him much or she cries. I so understand where she is. I was just tickled that they ventured out!

I had a wonderful conversation about faith and the condition of the church today with a sweet friend who is very involved with the Methodist Church. Another is still healing from a bad fall she took a couple of years ago. I went all through school with a couple of the gals. We were Vienna kids.

When I was finished, I called Mr. FixIt to see what he was up to. He reminded me he’d be coming to town a little later for his hair cut. So I ran a couple of errands then called the former Mrs. FixIt to see if she’d like some company. I went over and spent a couple of hours chatting and sharing pictures of our summer escapades. It was really nice to catch up. Finally, Mr. FixIt called to say he was finished and when he found out where I was, he came over, too.

It was getting closer to our supper time and we decided to go to a new-ish restaurant not too far away. Southern Craft Restaurant and Bar has been the talk of the town the last couple of years. It’s pretty small…maybe ten tables or so…and it’s always crowded. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Owned and operated by the DeAngelo family, Southern Craft has brought a taste of New Orleans to da ‘Burg. Authentic, real live Cajun food, y’all!!!

Oh, my word!

Mr. FixIt ordered the Shrimp and Grits and I had a bowl of Gumbo with Chicken and Andouille Sausage. We literally sipped each luscious spoonful and swooned! We tasted each other’s dishes and vowed this was our new favorite restaurant. The seasoning was spot on perfection. So full bodied and it brought just enough heat to complement the dishes without destroying the depth of flavor.

Louis DeAngelo, his wife and their three sons handle all the food prep and the waitstaff is friendly, prompt, and helpful. If you EVER find yourselves anywhere near Parkersburg, WV you simply must stay over and enjoy a meal at Southern Craft. Tell them Marshmallow Ranch sent you!!!

We ended the night with tornado warnings. There was one sighted over in Ohio and another in South Parkersburg. We had an incredible lightning show but it didn’t turn into anything much here. I hope you all remain safe from the increasing storms!
