You all...this was SUCH a fun weekend but incredibly hot and I’m fried in more ways than one. I didn’t go out in the sun at all without an umbrella. I forgot sunscreen, and even with the umbrella, I got a sunburn on my arms. You’d think I’d learn by now, wouldn’t you?\n
The hardest thing about the last day of the fair is…you can’t even begin to start breaking anything down until 5:00. Then, you have to get a pass to bring your vehicle into the area to load up. If you didn’t have some organization, with all these vendors…it would be total chaos. I have to tell you, they do have this thing down to a science and it all runs very smoothly. Gail got her van packed up first, and since it was its OWN vehicle, she got out first. Then came getting Janine’s truck in, packed up, and hook up her trailer. Last, I dragged my little wagon out to the parking lot where my truck was parked, unloaded everything into the back, and headed to the campground. The girls decided to head on home and not camp…which I totally understand. I had already paid for my campsite, and I was exhausted. So, this morning when you read this…I’m sleeping in!
\n
Here’s a picture of Janine’s little camper by Liberty Outdoors. It’s a Little Guy Mini Max. It weighs only 2000 pounds and has absolutely everything in it you could want…potty, shower, two-burner propane cooktop, microwave, a big refrigerator/freezer with a refrigerated wine drawer, a deep sink, hot and cold running water, AC, furnace, plenty of storage, TV, and 200 watt solar panels on the roof. Janine has it configured with a twin bed, but you can pull it out into a queen. In the low $20,000’s.Not bad for a new 2019. Very well built with quality materials.
\n
“Will Moses…great-grandson of Grandma Moses.”
\n
The second picture is Will Moses. He is the great-grandson of Grandma Moses. He was there with his art…done in the style of his famous great-grandmother. He says he remembers her…he was five years old when she died.
\n
And with that…I’m heading to bed. I had WAY too much fun in the sun the last three days. But I’ll drift off with a smile remembering all the really nice people I met and talked with.
\n
Have a great Monday! ❤️
\n

\n",

What a treat!”
\n
“Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.” Ecclesiastes 9:7 NIV
\nYou know what? One of the sweetest things that ever happens to me at one of these events is when one of my readers steps up to me and says...”I love your blog! I’ve been reading it for a long time.” My heart melts and I just want to give them a great big hug! It happened twice yesterday! First, Ruth Ann came all the way from Cincinnati. She was so gracious and I was so happy to meet her. Then, Beth stopped by to say hello. She follows Janine’s podcast and learned about Marshmallow Ranch from my interview on Episode #5. What a sweetie. She’s young and looking forward to camping in her own trailer someday. \n
“Fellow Rancher, Beth, came to see me at Country Living Fair. It’s such an honor to meet my readers!”
\n
It was another scorcher yesterday. The truck said 93 degrees at 5:00 when I got in to head back to the campground. I got a little sunburned this time. Janine and I were sitting outside her little camper when Mary and her friend Amy stopped to visit. Over an hour later, we were exchanging e-mail addresses with promises to keep in touch. You know…sometimes you just meet someone and you know there’s a reason you’re supposed to keep in touch. That was the case with these two.
\n
“Mary and Amy listening to Janine talk about the joys of Girl Camping.”
\n
We had an extra person with us yesterday so we got to take little breaks and walk around more. I explored the near side of the fair. I bought this cute little striped dress I’m wearing in the pictures. It was pretty comfy. Then I headed to the food court to get my supper. I had an organic, grass fed beef cheeseburger, an ear of roasted corn, and a small scoop of Buckeye Bash iced cream. Lunch was a corn cake with pulled pork, slaw, and roasted corn relish with a drizzle of BBQ sauce. OMGosh…what a treat!
\n
“Fair Food…Roasted Corn!”
\n

\n
Fun, friends and fair food. It was SO hot yesterday at the fair. The ground was saturated from the storms last weekend and with the heat baking down on all that damp earth, it was like sitting in a sauna. Fortunately, we had an EZUp and battery powered fans, and there was a bit of a breeze most of the day. If I walked around anywhere, I used an umbrella and a wide brimmed hat and that helped a lot.\n
“Fun fencing surrounding a booth full of baskets and pumpkins.”
\n
The fair didn’t seem quite as busy the first day as it has in years past. Some vendors attributed that to the heat. Others to the fact they added a spring Country Living Fair in Columbus this year. They were worried maybe that kind of divided our audience. I do know the booth rent is pretty steep for an event like this so I hope the vendors do well and the show continues to be a success.
\n
“LOVED this light fixture made from an old pulley and Edison-style bulbs.”
\n
We each took turns wandering around the booths yesterday. We also had our favorite food vendors staked out. For breakfast, there was Miss Perolee’s Blackberry Cobbler and lunch was from Sweet Carrots…baked Mac ‘n Cheese with Pulled Pork on top drizzled with a little Smoky BBQ Sauce. Yummmm!
\n
“Nothing more cozy than a chippy-white porch swing filled with pillows made from vintage quilts.”
\n
Here are some of my favorite items from my meandering. I only covered half the fair. It’s all a bit overwhelming. It would truly take three days to walk through and see everything…hence, it is a three day festival. But, when you are working the fair, you don’t have that kind of time. I really enjoy visiting with the people who stop to see the campers. Our glamped up tent was a big hit! I’ll walk the other half tomorrow and get more pictures. It’s supposed to be another hot one but we have an extra person helping tomorrow. Let’s hope it’s really busy! Come see us!
\n
“Crocks are some of my favorite collectibles, although I prefer blue ones. My favorite event of the year. I’m here to lend a hand to Janine Pettit...Girl Camper Podcaster and Blogger and all around great camper gal and Gail Bable, my dear friend who is the camp host at Beaver Creek State Park. We headed to the fairgrounds bright and early yesterday morning. Well, ok...not TOO bright and early. We had to sit in TOW-Wanda and gather our wits about us while we had our morning hot beverages and cinnamon rolls! The camp host here at the fairgrounds woke me up WAY too early to register and pay so if you’re up anyway...it’s time for coffee!\n
You can see in this photo of TOW-Wanda…I got a primo campsite under the only tree in the place! You can’t see beyond us, but there’s another huge campground and beyond that are the railroad tracks. Between the trains and the flight path out of the Columbus airport and all the sirens…it’s a pretty noisy place. But I just popped in my earplugs and slept like a baby!
\n
“My friend Gail brought her vintage 1990 Ford Econoline 250 camper van to show at Country Living Fair this weekend. There’s TOW-Wanda…stocked and ready to give us a cool respite in the heat of the day.”
\n
Gail brought her vintage 1990 Ford Econoline 259 camper van to dress up and show at the fair this year. Janine has her Little Guy Mini Max with her. (Photos tomorrow!) TOW-Wanda is staying here at the campground as a staging area for cooling off and napping.
\n
Center stage at this year’s Girl Camper display is “Champ”…Janine’s WAY cool new tent made by Stout Tents. A lot of gals follow the Girl Campers, Sisters on the Fly, and other women’s camping pages and they want to join in the fun but don’t have a camper. We wanted to demonstrate this year that you don’t have to have a huge investment in something as expensive as a camper to go out and have fun with the gals. This tent can not only serve as your single source of camp lodging…but, it can also become your “guest bedroom”. Janine loves camping in her little camper, but sometimes she wants to take some friends along and there’s just not enough room in her trailer. Voila! Champ becomes that second bedroom big enough to put at least three cots in. At 13’ across, you could sleep 5-6 in sleeping bags. That would make for a fun slumber party, wouldn’t it?
\n
“Setting up the new Stout Tent at Country Living Fair. Janine pounds in the ground stakes while I pull the guy wires taut.”
\n
We spent the day in wilting heat, decorating this little tent with some wonderful old wool blankets and afghans, pillows, and vintage camping gear from Janine’s vast personal collection. She has her own She-Shed devoted entirely to the vintage finds she has gathered over the years. It was fun watching the grounds fill up with some of the COOLEST stuff around. I can’t wait till we get to take our little breaks and walk around to see all the booths. It’s literally like walking into the pages of a Country Living Magazine. If you ever get the opportunity, you really should go. And, if you happen to be in the Columbus area this weekend, come and see us!!! ❤️
\n

\n",

And, because the girls had their campers on display at the fair, we “camped” at the Holiday Inn. My roommate was Jill Evans. Jill is nearing the empty nest era and recently purchased a 1972 Airstream Landyacht. Fortunately, all the major mechanical stuff was just about done. But when she received it, the interior was that familiar dark brown that many women have come to loathe in an RV. She set to work fine tuning the interior and the results are stunning.
\n\n
The first thing she did was remove the oven from the wall. Jill used a liquid sander and wiped down the interior surfaces, removing a lot of accumulated “gunk” then painted three coats of Valspar paint/primer over nearly everything but the floor. She replace the old Formica countertop with a dark wood laminate that looks all the world like a solid butcher block.
\n\n
Jill’s decorating style is impeccable. Getting rid of 95% of my personal belongings just a year after losing Mr. Virgo was very stressful. I have been so careful not to accumulate “stuff” again. But, I’ve got to tell ya…this Country Living Fair is exceptional. I think this is my third in a row and it seems each one gets better. I will have to say, there were a lot more people here on opening day than the last two years. If that’s any indication of the overall attendance, we’re in for a whale of an event!
\n
When you work a Fair such as this, you try to have enough people helping that you can take breaks and wander around. As I was walking over to the main stage for Janine’s talk yesterday, I spied some windmill vanes and stopped after to price them. The one in this photo was a half vane for $600! One with two less fins was $400. Still way out of my price range. My daughter’s sister-in-law has one she got from the family ranch and has it mounted on the wall in her dining room. I’d love to have one, but A) I’m not spending that kind of money and B) I don’t have anyplace to put it right now, and C) experiences before stuff. I could have a really great trip for $600.
\n
Wandering the aisles of the fair is so tempting. I will tell you what I bought yesterday. A nice serving of Miss Parolee’s Kentucky Deep-Dish Blackberry Cobbler warmed up with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. Windmill vane. Miss Parolee’s cobbler. I think I made the better choice! ❤️
\n
“Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. We had to wait our turn to pull the three campers into the grounds so we sat around and nibbled on finger foods and caught up with what’s been going on in each other’s lives. Girl Camper extraordinaire, Janine Pettit, regaled us with stories of her epic month long trip to the National Parks out west this summer. Gail shared that her daughter is going to live overseas for a year. Jill was excited about her new-to-her Airstream she recently redecorated. I shared the article from the Fidelity online magazine. Sisters and Girl Campers always pick up where we left off the last time.
\n
I don’t know if you’ve ever gone to a Country Living Fair but the amount of work that goes on in the background to set something up this massive and intricate is astounding. We drove in on cue when it was our turn. The area where we set up is pretty tight and it took a great deal of maneuvering to get all three campers in just right. I’m glad I have some mad backing up skills because they came in handy yesterday!
\n
Once the three campers were set up, they had to be “staged”. You’ve all seen those cute campers in the magazines with all the vintage collectibles or great quilts or baskets of flowers? All those things were placed there with an eye much more skilled than mine. When these girls were finished, it looked just like a photo shoot! I can’t wait to take pictures today!
\n
As I walked through the fair grounds, the displays were eye candy for someone who cannot resist the colorful, glossy pages of Country Living Magazine. It’s like the magazine itself has come alive…its pages exploding on the grounds all around you! Antiques, linens, rusty farm implements, artsy clothing and jewelry…you name it, it’s here. Including the kitchen sink. It’s truly one of the most beautiful fairs of its kind in the country. I’m so looking forward to browsing when I can.
\n
I’ve read Country Living Magazine for years. Now that I’m living a country life, it would be so easy to accumulate too much stuff again and, seriously…I really don’t want to go through that kind of downsizing ever again. I carefully curate what comes in my house now. I only have what is useful and I know to be beautiful. The trouble is…there is SO much that I find beautiful. So my third measure is…Would I rather have this “thing” or go someplace with that money. Mr. Virgo was gone in a heartbeat, literally, and I was left to make some sense and order out of the chaos left behind. Looking back on it with today’s vision, I can see so many things I would have done differently. I don’t think I made huge mistakes, but I think if I would have known then what I know now, there are definitely things I would have done differently.
\n
I hosted the Sisters on the Fly event over the weekend and there were a couple fairly new widows there. They did well, enjoyed themselves, and were very capable campers. I could see through all that to the pain that lay beneath the surface. I recognized them…I was there not all that long ago myself.
\n
A couple of years ago, I was contacted by a writer and published author of many books on women and finance. She was writing an article for the New York Times on widowhood and retirement and asked if she could interview me. We have stayed in touch over the last couple of years and she has followed my blog. Recently I heard from her again. She had been asked by Fidelity to write an article about widowhood and investing and immediately thought of me. We spoke again and I shared those things I felt I did right, and those I could have…should have…done differently.
\n
The article for Fidelity’s “Viewpoints” online magazine went live yesterday and I am sharing it with you here. From the beginning, this blog was meant not only as a way to share and heal my own grief, but also to serve as a place to learn, grow, and experience support if you are grieving, and preparation if you aren’t. Knowledge is power and grief makes you feel totally powerless. I wish I would have had a grief mentor in my early stages of loss. I try to be that person for others. If it weren’t for God covering me with His feathers to guide, guard, and protect me, I never would have survived such a loss.
\n
And now, here I am nearly five years after losing Mr. Virgo and I not only have survived, I am thriving. New life, new love, new experiences. I never would have dreamed this was possible. Today I leave for the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Please stop by for a visit if you are in the area! ❤️
\n
https://www.fidelity.com/viewpoints/personal-finance/8-financial-tips-for-widows
\n
“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”\n‭‭Psalm‬ ‭91:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬
\n

\n",

First, the Country Living Fair was amazing. I got to spent a good block of time with my friend and mentor, Janine Pettit of the Girl Camper podcast and goRVing fame. We did live broadcasts from the fair which was great fun. TOW-Wanda is ready to put away for the winter. Her water pump works fine according to the guy at the RV shop. It didn't work for me all summer. Go figure. Her bearings have been repacked and they rebuilt the wall behind the bed where the water leaked in because a seal was missing from when it was built.
\n\n\n
Church was absolutely amazing yesterday. And, my talk at pub church was very well received. I felt the Holy Spirit speak into my life on many levels the last few days and it was a beautiful thing. I love it when God brings me opportunities to speak into people's lives. I videotaped my talk last night but have to wait till I find Wi-Fi to upload it.
\n\n\n
I need to get a lot done in the next few days. The flea dude comes back Wednesday. I'd like to get some more painting done in the house. I need to spray the poison ivy before the leaves fall off and I can't recognize it. And, I'm going camping with the Girl Campers this weekend! Autumn is coming...life is good!!!
\n\n\n
❤️
\n\n\n
\n
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”‭‭
\nProverbs‬ ‭18:21‬ ‭NIV‬‬\n
\n\n",

Booth after booth of antiques and high quality arts and crafts spilled out in the pathways, beckoning you to come into the shady recesses of the vendor tents. Soaps, candles, jewelry, clothing, wall art, figurines, signs...it was a veritable cacophony of color and rust, lace and dust. And don't get me started on the food tents! Ice cream and honey and salsa and cobbler and burgers and pickles...it was enough to put me over the edge of my self-imposed dietary restrictions. But I was good. A cheeseburger, no bun. Fries with Sriracha salt. A roasted ear of corn. Yummmm.
\n\n\n
I showed my greatest restraint when I sat in a beautiful Airstream, looking out over the fair goers lugging bags and wagons and carts full of stuff that looks like much of the stuff I dropped off at the thrift shop when I downsized two years ago. Even the clothes held little appeal to me. Most of the styles are loose and flowing and I have plenty of that already. One artist had my attention. I circled around twice, three times. I liked her jewelry last year but resisted buying anything. She's back.
\n\n\n
I don't know what's wrong with me. I used to love to shop. But now all I see is stuff I'll have to get rid of someday. If it doesn't serve a purpose or bring me great joy, I really don't need it. I know at least three men who would have loved for me to have felt this way when they were married to me! lol
TOW-Wanda is ready to be picked up today. They said the water pump worked fine. It hasn't worked for me for months so who knows. Maybe something was loose and driving it up there jerked it back in place. I'll keep an eye on it.
\n\n\n
I am doing something fun today. At 11:00 I'm broadcasting live here on Marshmallow Ranch from the Country Living Fair. I'm pulling the camper up to Columbus to get some warranty work done. While it's in the shop, I'm bunking with good friend and mentor, fellow Sister on the Fly and Girl Camper...Janine Pettit. Janine has a podcast called Girl Camper on iTunes and it's all about traveling the back roads of America and learning how to camp like a girl. Janine has been promoting the Girl Camper movement since 1999. She's not the only visionary in this field. Maurrie and Becky from Sisters on the Fly, Mary Jane Butters with her Glampers on the Loose, and Julie Thorsen from Girl Camping...just some of the great women who promote this lifestyle. I think the original Girl Camper was Mazie Morrison, mother of the real life sisters who founded Sisters on the Fly. She was one amazing woman. She had moxie.
\n\n\n
Janine will be at the Country Living Fair and I get to hang out with her and meet and greet the fair goers as they meander around the Campers that will be there. TOO fun...and all the beautiful vendor booths are more than worth the trip to one of the four annual fairs put on by Country Living Magazine. I'm excited to attend. This will be my third fair.
\n\n\n
I'll send pictures along as the week progresses! A perfect fall day spent wandering around the Ohio State Fairgrounds, marveling at the beautifully handcrafted items and the glorious displays of antiques. I especially enjoyed the Kentucky Deep Dish Blackberry Cobbler a la Mode and coffee I had for breakfast while I visited with three of the coolest gals from Charlotte. They drove all that way just to come to the Country Living Fair! And it was well worth it. If you ever get a chance, go! I went to the one in Nashville in the Spring. Although comparable, the Nashville show had more clothes. Those southern girls LOVE their clothes!!! One of the best treats yesterday was getting to visit Girl Camper extraordinaire, Janine Pettit. A fellow camper, Janine has been a Girl Camping Ambassador for years. I was put on this earth to talk to people and tell stories. I sat and helped Janine visit with people who came by the RV displays and to see these great women of camping. I love, love, LOVE it!
