Change is good. Without it, there is no movement. A stagnant life is a boring life. Sometimes we want things to stay the same forever. First kisses. Falling in love. A sleeping baby. A lazy afternoon in the mountains sitting by a lake. But, there is only one guarantee in life and that is that things change. Sometimes with devilish rapidity. I have found the key to satisfaction in life is to slow down time which gives change a chance to catch its breath. Let it leave you alone for a little bit. One way to accomplish this is through the practice of mindfulness. This keeps you in the present moment.
For instance, as I am writing this, I have a quilt in the dryer, I have a stack of magazines I’m breezing through in order to get rid of them. I have a couple of cabinets torn apart in my camper to reorganize before I leave next week. There are boxes to go through. I need to clean out the truck. But, at this very moment, there is a storm overhead, and I have been kicked back listening to the rain on the roof and the thunder rolling. It won’t last long…it never does here in Colorado. But if I choose to slow down time and stay present, I need to set aside my afternoon chores, stretch out, close my eyes and get lost in the moment. In the mountains we forget to count the days. In the moment, we stop time…if only for a short while.

““My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and they come to an end without hope. Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again. The eye that now sees me will see me no longer; you will look for me, but I will be no more. As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so one who goes down to the grave does not return. He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more.”
Job 7:6-10
