God has a sense of humor. He knows when we’ve had it up to here. That’s when he sends you something so patently absurd, you can’t help but break out into a belly laugh. That’s one of the ways the Great Healer heals…He brings us laughter.
Mr. FixIt and I had a laundry list of things that needed doing yesterday in town…one of which was to mail some overdue greeting cards. There were two condolence cards and a graduation card, so I sat down to write. I filled out the first card and wrote a lovely note. As I prepared to start the second condolence card, Mr. FixIt interrupted me as he was looking for the graduation announcement. We needed it for the address to send the graduation card.
I told him not to worry, I would just text his sister to get the address. It wasn’t long till she and I were chatting back and forth. She gave me the address and I wrote it on the envelope. As we chatted about the smoked pork I canned last week, I wrote the sentiment in the card and popped it in the envelope.
Then I reached for…. Suddenly, I was puzzled. The only card left was the graduation card. If that’s the case…what was I writing in? I opened the envelope and there was the sympathy card…addressed to the young graduate! I started laughing, because I could just imagine which one would be funnier.
The new graduate with…
Remembering you in thought and prayer... Let there be hope. Let there be stories. Let there be celebration of a life well-lived. Let there be tears, but let there be happy memories of all you shared.
or…
My cousin, the new widow, with the handwritten sentiment….
“Congratulations on your Graduation & Best Wishes in your Future Endeavors!”
I told my cousin about it last night and we laughed till we cried. I wonder which one I should send it to?
When we were leaving Walmart later in the afternoon, I walked by a woman on her cell phone. Her husband had wandered off and she was on the phone, trying to explain he should turn around and he could see her. Finally, she got frustrated and without the phone, she yelled his name.
“Marco!!!”
To which I turned around and shouted…
“Polo!!!”
We stood looking at each other for half a beat and literally doubled over laughing. Oh, you can’t make this stuff up!
Later in the day, I was on the phone with my son-in-law’s mom. Her husband and our granddaughter, “Little”, went to the nursing home to see her great grandmother yesterday afternoon. When she got home she said,
“Mimi, Grandma has gotten sick and almost died so many times in the last few years. There have been times Mom picked us up and we just went straight to the nursing home to say goodbye. Then she rallies and gets better. You know, I think most people go up there and knock on the doors of Heaven and are let right in. But, not Grandma. I think she rings the doorbell and runs!”
What a delightfully happy diversion laughter can be when things are so hard and dark. Laughter IS the best medicine!!!
And, oh…by the way…my cousin won. I’m sending HER the card…as is!

…and in that there is joy and joy was spread…ONE moment to the next. This made me giggle. Co worker and I were ordering tests for patients last week where we work(local hospital) and we could not figure out why she couldn’t order an ultrasound pregnancy for a patient. We looked at the paper order, we looked at the patients name matched, and looked, hit enter several times, tried re ordering it…then we looked at each other and burst out laughing….it was a male and was 84 years old….whom needed a pelvis ultasound…..it was a long day

from the mouths of babes…that’s a great one!

I know the saying is worn out, but “laughter really is the best medicine.” I love to laugh. Although my dog didn’t think it was funny because I woke her up laughing so hard…she left the room.?
