Day Four – What Was I Thinking???

Well, first of all, the drive was a LOT shorter yesterday, even though we did have one bumper to bumper slowdown for six miles. But it eased up more quickly than the day before, so I was happy. We stopped at the Walmart in North Platte, Nebraska to pick up something special for supper for our last night of this leg of the trip. Mr. FixIt suggested my shrimp scampi, so that’s what we got. Colossal shrimp. Great big huge mama honkin’ shrimp that made my mouth water just thinking about it. We weren’t just gonna EAT…we were gonna DINE!

I grabbed some broccoli and sliced mushrooms, some garlic, and a package of high protein pasta and we drove the last 12 miles to the campground. Oregon Trail RV Campground boasts having something for everyone. Located right on the edge of Sutherland Reservoir (Sutherland, Nebraska), there is a beautiful golf course and maybe 35 campsites. They all have electric and water and it’s conveniently located only a mile or so from I-80.

The downside is, every campsite is mainly weeds and grass and the sites are not terribly large so you’re kinda camping in a parking lot. And…hokey smokes…it was Saturday night of July 4th weekend!!! I have no idea what I thought it would be like, but it wasn’t this. There were several sets of tweens racing golf carts all around the campground. Every site had kids setting off fireworks. Parents were nowhere to be found…sitting off in groups laughing while their children were being…well, CHILDREN!

Honestly, it was great!!! The smiles and squeals of delight. The dirty kids and their dogs racing around and, even when they cut through your campsite, they looked sheepish and said, “Sorry.” These children are making memories they will keep the rest of their lives. When their parents are old and gray, they will sit around with them and reminisce about the great times at the lake in the summers. Tanned, sun bleached hair, and dirty feet. That’s happiness to a child. I’d much rather see them doing this than sitting in front of a video game console any day of the week!

So…the shrimp was fabulous. My husband loves me still. Gas wasn’t outrageous. And we see our Colorado peeps today. Life is good!
