Balance. There are many things we need to balance in life. Work and play. Family and jobs. Kids and finances. Exercise and food. I once worked for an old school Doctor. He carefully explained his diet to every patient. And it was SO simple.
- No bread.
- No potatoes.
- No desserts.
- No second helpings (w/ reasonable portion sizes).
He reminded his patients…”The last bite does not taste any better than the first one did. Stop testing that theory.”
He told them “If you eat one calorie less than you burn off, you will lose weight. But it’s going to take a heck of a long time to do it. Do yourself a favor and widen the gap.”
I loved that guy. Everything was very simple with him.
I hate the word “diet”. It is synonymous with “deprivation”. I prefer “nourish”. We know full well what is nourishing to our bodies. I ate four boxes of Hagen Daz ice cream bars (10/box!!!) between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, I am embarrassed to admit. We won’t even talk about the Pop-Tarts. I was sequestered, writing, watching the snow fall, depressed with winter, bored. I knew what I was doing but I did it anyway. And now I’m paying for it.
We develop habits and addictions. We soothe and comfort and reward and punish with one of the most important things our body needs to survive. We should love our body back to health. We should apologize to it for neglecting it. We should nurture it back to health. Change is difficult. We don’t like change. But let me tell you something. We can change it now…or the nutritionist is going to change it for us in coronary care.
It’s not too late. You’re not too old, or too fat, or too far gone. One thing. Change just one thing. Add fruit instead of pie. Put the salad dressing on the side and just dip the edge of each bite in it for flavor. Try sprinkling a little nutritional yeast over your veggies instead of cheese. Then it will be easier to change two.
If I can stop eating ice cream, so can you! I love you guys. I want you to be healthy. This was dinner last night. Yellow fin tuna, quinoa, cucumber salad, fruit salad, roasted crinkle cut squash with snow peas and red peppers. That was a boatload of food and I couldn’t finish the whole thing. And there’s not a ton of calories. I don’t count calories. I don’t weigh and measure. I follow Dr. Huttner’s diet plan and drink lots of water and it always works for me.
My posts are never intended as medical advice. I just tell you what I do. Always ask your healthcare professional before starting an exercise program or making major dietary changes.
