Froggy Went a’Courtin’

I’ve been hearing these frogs out by the pool all spring. Calling back and forth. I’d never heard them in our yard before. They sounded like they were under the deck where there are some mud puddles…the perfect environment for them. One has been making a call that sounds like a chicken. I did a Google search and discovered that was the mating call of the male green tree frog. Uh-oh. I had a sinking feeling about this.

I came out back last night to listen to their calls and try to figure out exactly where they were. I heard the one making the chicken sound and yelled for Mr. FixIt to come out and listen. Then…I heard a splash. Now, there isn’t enough water in those puddles to make a splash, so I crept up on the deck to have a peek.

OMGosh!

Remember how I said the pool resembles a prop from a movie? Swamp Thing comes to mind. Well…not only do we have our own personal swamp, we also have the amphibians squatting all over the place in there living rent free in the pool! I took the skimmer net and tried to scoop them out but one jumped and landed on my arm and I decided this was a job for another night! Mr. FixIt says they’ve had them before. I really want to get them out before we put chemicals in the pool.

What next? I dare not ask!

We didn’t get a lot accomplished yesterday. It was, after all, a holiday. We cooked. We ate. And we replaced one of the rotten boards on the deck. We need to go to town to get more boards. We also need to move the leftover wood from building the beds because the pressure washer is conveniently located behind that mess.

I am not used to things taking so long to get done. I’ve always just gone ahead and get started on the jobs I determine needs doing. But there are so many extenuating circumstances now to consider. The wishes of my spouse. Money. Time. And physical ability. I used to get frustrated with it, but I’ve learned (most of the time) to go with the flow and realize it will get done at some point. One way or another. It saves us both a lot of stress when I eliminate my handwringing.

We went for a walk around the pollinator gardens last evening as the sun was fading. There was a deer down at the end of the far field carefully watching our approach, hand-in-hand. The daisies are prolific and definitely the most prominent flower out there now. I mentioned to Mr. FixIt that I was worried that I wasn’t seeing many bees. He said not to worry…there were tons on the honeysuckle vines. I was relieved to hear that and I’ll have a look today.

I hope you had a nice weekend and have been safe from the severe weather!
