Getting Lost

Lost Lake Campground is located high up Kebler Pass. Many years ago, Mr. Virgo and I stopped her for lunch and were run off by the campground host as we weren’t camping…just out for a drive. I always swore I’d come back but I couldn’t remember how to get there. I was meandering along through the woods yesterday and felt that familiar nudge I get when Mr. Virgo’s trying to get me to do something.

“Watch for it. Watch for it.”

“Ok, Ok…I’m watching! What am I watching for?”

“Turn. Turn up the hill.”

“Ok.”

Sure enough, 1/4 mile up the road was the turnoff. It seemed familiar but I still wasn’t sure where I was going. Two miles out the dirt road, there it was! That beautiful, glassy green water reflecting the mountains beyond. I pulled over and sat on a rock to take in the views. I had no intention of staying there overnight. I need to get back to Denver because my truck is ready.

“Would you like to stay with us tonight?”

I nearly jumped out of my skin as I turned to see the camp host standing nearby.

“We only have one opening.”

I heard Mr. Virgo whisper….”Stay, baby doll. Stay.”

“Yes…yes, I’ll take that spot. Where’s the nearest cell service so I can let folks know where I am?”

“You can go down the road to Paonia. They have cell service. Do you have a card?” she smiled.

“Card?” I asked.

“Are you 62?” she asked tentatively.

“Why yes! I turned 62 two weeks ago!”

“Well, while you’re in town, go to the National Forest Service office and get your Senior Pass. Best $10 you’ll ever spend. Your entry fee will be waived at all National Parks and your camping fees at Federal Campgrounds will be half off!”

Score!!! So, I’m out of the loop, off the grid, lost in the hills. Just one night…but a great night!
