We are divvying up the chores these days, trying to get more done before the Colorado trip. We pull the camper with my truck. It’s been making a funny noise lately. It’s really difficult to get in to a mechanic around here. We had a wonderful guy right here in town but he suffered a devastating injury in an ATV accident early this spring and had to close his garage. Thank God he’s still with us, but we needed to find someone else. I’m not sure what is causing the shortage in mechanics, but we’re running into roadblocks at every turn.
Mr. FixIt finally found a guy that would at least listen to the sound and send us in the right direction. We found someone to work on it on the 18th. Cutting it a little close before our departure date, but we’ll take what we can get. While he was off taking care of the truck, I took his truck and went to The Farm to mow.
We had a hard rain yesterday morning and the ground was pretty wet, but by the time I got out there, things were starting to dry up. It doesn’t take long at all to mow out there. It’s probably just about an acre of grass. There was a nice breeze, full sun, and only 79° so it was quite pleasant.
I stopped on the way home at Happy Jim’s to see what he has that’s new. They recently bought out a couple of estate sales and there are lots of things to choose from. I’ve been looking for garden flags around town but they’ve gotten so expensive. Jim had three of them from my favorite shop. They were new in the bag and half price so I couldn’t pass them up.
On my way back to the checkout counter, I passed a bookcase stuffed with wonderful cookbooks. Several of them had handwritten recipes stuck within the pages. I didn’t have time to sort through them all, but I picked eight of them to start with. The hard covers were $1 and paperbacks were $.50! The first one I looked through was copycat recipes of favorite dishes from popular restaurants. I found several recipes that I want to try. The book that intrigues me the most is the Martha Washington Cook Book.
When I got home, I put things away then headed out to mow the fenced area around the pool. Mr. FixIt usually does this, but we’ve been so busy and it’s been raining. I had the time and the energy to do it so I was finished, showered, and glancing through a cookbook when he got home. I stopped and fixed us hamburgers and waffle fries for supper. We had a great tomato and Vidalia Onions to slice. And we’re still eating from the jar of Bread and Butter Pickles that Loretta gave me for Christmas. Honestly, I could sit there with that pint of pickles and a fork and finish them off in five minutes, but I really want to savor them.
One of Mr. FixIt’s errands yesterday was to take a water sample from the pool in to the pool supply store to see where we are with the chemicals. We needed to add a pound of chlorine and two pounds of alkali to the water. We had another really hard rain storm but once that was over, we treated the pool and watched the news. An hour later we tested again. Getting these chemicals just right is a really tricky business but I’ll get the hang of it. And then, we’ll be gone nearly six weeks and won’t be able to monitor it every day. I’m sure whoever we get to mow while we are gone will be happy to dump some chemicals in for us.
I’m praying for rain to keep things cool while we are so busy getting things caught up around here. I’m also praying all these storms calm down by the time we head through the upper Midwest.
