Hamster Power

Hamster in a wheel
“When your internet is powered by hamsters, you need to find alternatives.”

Internet service is spotty when you live in the boonies. So is cell phone service. And, if you live WAY out in the boonies, the only way you can even USE a cellphone is if it is a iPhone and connected to the wonky country internet. It’s a Catch 22.

I finally bought an internet “booster”. It doesn’t make your internet any faster or less fluctuating, but it does allow what crappy internet service you DO have to reach down the hall to the bedroom. I’m been known to talk like a sailor when I’m trying to meet a deadline working from home.

The other night, Mr. FixIt was reading in bed beside me when he turned and looked at me over his glasses.

“What on earth are you doing?”

“I’m sending a picture!” I was holding my cellphone high over my head and waving it back and forth…willing the little waves to work faster or whatever they do in the ether sphere.

“You look lovely, though.”

“Thanks a lot, buddy!” I smiled over at him as he shook his head and went back to his article.

I got an e-mail over the weekend to send pictures from several Girl Camper gatherings to headquarters. I carefully went through all the pictures, divided them up over four e-mails, and sent them on. The next morning there were four notices that none of the e-mails went through. These were crucial so I went to town yesterday and sat at the library and e-mailed the photos, five per e-mail. It still took three hours but I got them done.

For the most part, there are so many advantages to living in the country. The peace and quiet, the surrounding nature, the beautiful night sounds and all the stars. But, 95% of my work needs good internet. I had to go to town anyway yesterday. Next time, I’ll try our little local library and see if their internet is any better than ours.

Speaking of living in the country, I went out to the farm on Sunday and was pleased to see the wild grape vines I cut in half died. The house is no longer being threatened to be overgrown and swallowed by the surrounding flora. The fellow down the road who is mowing for me is doing a wonderful job. The lawn looks like a well-trimmed golf course.

This is the great time of year when the grass growth slows down tremendously and we don’t have to mow twice a week. The trees are beginning to show twinges of color and the leaves are fading to a dull army green. The temperature the last few nights was in the 50’s which makes for great sleeping weather. I’m gathering what I will need to carry with me in the new camper on the big trip coming up. Just a little over two weeks till I leave for the Hershey RV Show!
