“It’s just a jump to the left…” Sometimes that jump is a big one. I’m not shy about stepping boldly out of my comfort zone and doing wild and wacky things. But for some, it’s a big stretch to reach out into the unknown. Last night I got to do something I’ve wanted to do for years. There was a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at a newly refurbished historic theater. I’ve seen the film before, but never in a theater.
RHPS was not a hit when it came out in 1975. It was very racy for the time and there are still parts that would never pass mom approval. It wasn’t until they started showing the movie at midnight in art theaters that the movie became a cult classic. Audience members dressed up as their favorite characters and interacted with the film. Squirt guns, newspapers, toilet paper, toast, cards. All become projectiles with certain lines shouted along with the actors.
I have no problem putting myself out there. But I was not married to men who would play along so I never went. A friend of mine is reinventing her life after losing her husband about a year and a half ago. RHPS was NOT in her wheelhouse. But when I asked her to go she didn’t skip a beat and said yes even though she was shy about it. She didn’t want to be a showy character. We both chose “Columbia”. She in the pajamas scene and I as the showgirl scene. I was thrilled to see her enjoy herself and I had a blast.
I came out of the theater feeling like I was in a time warp. I was so present in the moment that I couldn’t tell you how long the movie was. But I’d do it again. And so would my friend.
