“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.””
Isaiah 40:8 NIV
Yesterday was as near a perfect day as I can get without being with Mr. FixIt. My son-in-law’s parents…Ben & Sue…are the most gracious people on the planet. My daughter hit the lottery when it comes to her husband and his family. When I come to Colorado, I stay at the in-law’s house. There’s more room and more privacy. When the kids are busy, Ben and Sue and I hang out. We have our coffee together every morning that I’m not off galavanting around. We often eat dinner together and I always take them out a time or two for dinner…my treat.
After coffee yesterday morning, we had a few hours to kill before we headed to the last day of the swim meet. Sue and I have been planning to go antiquing ever since I arrived three weeks ago and one thing after another got in the way. So, yesterday was the day. We went to a new antique place on Tennyson in Arvada. OMGosh! What an amazing place.
From the moment I peeked in the garage door, I was in love. I knew this was my kind of place. Not overwhelmingly stocked like so many antique stores. I don’t particularly like “smalls”…those little tchotchkes you have to dust. The Tennyson Antique Warehouse had lots to look at but it wasn’t so busy you couldn’t concentrate.
I met a delightful couple in the antique shop. Leslie and Deana have been married ten years. They sell antiques in a small area of the shop. Deana is from Virginia so we had a lovely chat about the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge. You know how you meet some people and you just understand them…who they are, where they’ve been? That was how it was with these two. I hope we stay in touch.
As I wandered around, I came across a Victorian chamber toilet. It has a porcelain bucket for emptying. The lid closes and a mechanism moves and deposits some sort of deodorizer into the potty. Probably lime or some sort of perfumed concoction, I imagine. I’ll have to do some research. This wonderful find will go in my ‘67 Franklin…”Joy”. For now, it will reside in the basement here until I bring Joy cross country…hopefully next summer.
After antiquing, and a quick light lunch at Panera, we hightailed it up to the aquatic center to watch Big swim the mile. She added ten seconds to her time and came in last in her heat. She was devastated. She is a sprinter and couldn’t believe she qualified for the mile in the first place. But to be trounced really stung. She cried it out in the shower and picked herself up beautifully. A wonderful lesson…both for her and for me. Being an elegant loser is a sign of good character.
The kids left for vacation right after the swim meet so us “old folks” hit the early dinner at the barbecue place. Then we went to visit the matriarch of the family. Grandma Lois turns 89 today! It was a beautiful, beautiful day! Such wonderful memories. ❤
Lois looks absolutely wonderful. I’m glad you are all having a good time. Looks like great fun.
