There are fewer milestones in life that fill you with more pride than that of your children’s accomplishments. Today we are celebrating Daughter #1’s 20th wedding anniversary. She and my favorite son-in-law (I can say that…I only have one) have a beautiful marriage, a beautiful family, and a beautiful life together. They are steady, easy going, and as sweet with each other today as they were the day they married. And in-laws? OMGosh! She won the in-law lottery! I absolutely LOVE my son-in-law and his family. Good, hard working people that are as much my sister and brother as they are my dearest friends. We share grandchildren. We celebrate our joined family. That’s priceless!
Twenty years. So much has happened in twenty years. The kids moved to Long Island not long after they were married and lived there for four years. They came back home to start their family. Two babies and two houses in two decades. They took their very first vacation over Spring Break this year. They have an excellent work ethic. They make me look good in the child-rearing department but they’re the ones who have made it work.
So much has changed in my own life in those two decades. A divorce, a marriage, a death. The loss of both parents. Life. Life is what happened. According to John Lennon, it’s what happens when you’re making other plans. My life looks entirely different than what I imagined it would look like as I sat watching my baby girl get married. But the fact that they are the same with a good, stable marriage reassures me of the possibilities. I am so, so proud of them.
Congratulations, kids…may you celebrate many, many more anniversaries in good health!
