I took my time getting home yesterday and decided to stop at Tamarack near Beckley. This is an amazing gathering of WV artisans showing and selling their wares. I had to stop in the grill and have some fried green tomatoes. Yummmmmm! I walk the full circle and when I got back around to the front, a small group of musicians had gathered for an impromptu demonstration of Appalachian mountain music. What a treat!
The other day, a friend was helping me move some things around at the farmhouse and I came upon my great grandfather’s walking stick. The music yesterday made me smile as I remembered my great grandpa dancing the soft shoe across the back porch with that stick in hand, his bowler hat perched precariously on his head at a rakish angle, as my Pop-Pop played Turkey in the Straw on the fiddle. I now own that fiddle. I own that walking stick. And I’m living in that farmhouse. My life is so rich with memories. It was a delight to listen to that great music today. I spoke with the gentleman who makes dulcimer and psaltries at The Tamarack and he invited me to come down any time for a free lesson and demonstration. I’ve been thinking of doing some live broadcasts here so maybe that would be a fun one to do!
I got back to the farm after dark so there was no time to park and unhitch the camper. I’ll do that today. Suffice it to say, it was a fabulous week away and I’m ready to get back to work on my writing!
