Playing Catch-Up

Anytime you’re gone from home any length of time there’s always a stack of stuff to deal with when you get back. The mail, the laundry, the shopping. Yesterday it was dealing with the truck and getting it ready for the cross-country trip. We drove separately to the local garage yesterday morning and I brought Mr. FixIt home. He started working on outdoor projects that have been put on hold due to the rain. I worked on the second big trip we’re taking this year. We are going to the beach the week of our wedding anniversary and taking the camper. This is the first time we’ve done that, so I wanted to add three days of extra camping on each end of the trip and explore some places we usually just speed by. When we get back from that trip I think that will be the end of the 2023 camping season.

I am really excited by some of the campgrounds we’re going to visit…especially Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia. We’ve driven past the turn off to it so many times but never took the time to explore. The other place I’m interested in is Chippokes State Park (pronounced CHIP oaks). It’s across the James River from Jamestown. It looks beautiful!

It wasn’t very long till the garage called and said the truck was ready. Since it was finished so early, I dropped Mr. FixIt off to pay and then he took it straight to Walmart to get the oil changed and rotate the tires. And hopefully that will be enough to keep “Frankie” in shape to tow “Grace” up the mountains we’ll be traveling over. I think we’ll spend the next couple of days getting the camper stocked, change the bedding, do some laundry, and pick up around the house. I need to clean out the fridge.

Oh, I forgot to tell you what was waiting for me when I got home from camping with the girls. A dozen beautiful orange roses! What a man God has blessed me with. I am so grateful. He’s such a sport! We go out to the camper every evening and play cards. We still hold hands wherever we go and we’re starting to elicit smiles from younger people. He’s my best friend, my fellow explorer, my confidante, my giver of roses and hugs. I never dreamed I’d get to do this again and it makes my heart hurt for those who have lost their person. His kindness reminds me of where I’ve been. He makes me more compassionate and empathetic. I want to be a better person…the kind of person who deserves such treatment. As we get older, we are witnessing the grief of others more frequently. I think that makes us try harder than maybe we would have if we hadn’t suffered the losses we have.

It’s the weekend…what y’all doin’ this weekend?
