Road Trip: Day Ten…”She Is My Crown”

Girl in a camper

Dear God in Heaven…thank you for bringing this small human into my life! She and her sister are the delights of my life. Yesterday was our semi-annual “Nana and Little’s Day of Fun!” Each grandchild gets to pick and choose what they want to do with Nana, where and what they want to eat, and how the day and night will play out. Big is thirteen now so we pretty much go shopping and have lunch although last summer she did want to go to the Denver Aquarium with me. Little is only ten and she is still all about the fun we can have. Her day is always centered around shopping, doing a craft or baking, and a sleepover in TOW-Wanda. She told everyone at the mall what the significance of the day was and what we’ve done and what we’re going to do. She’s like me…gregarious, funny, creative. Her sister is the thinker, brilliant, caring…strong and tender.

Little always comes up with the funniest things. She is deep and profound and hilariously, seriously funny. Our first stop was 2nd & Charles…a bookstore where you can sell or trade your old books, movies, CD’s…even vinyl. There are three bins out front filled with free stuff. Yesterday, I picked up a book by Michael Moore, a cookbook with gluten free recipes, a Dr. Who Christmas Ornament still in the box, and Audubon’s Field Guide on Insects and Spiders of North America. Not a bad haul. As little and I rummaged through what was left in the bins, she came across a coloring activity sheet from either a Sunday School or Vacation Bible School. Jesus was standing with several children and someone had placed a sticker over his mouth. Little turned to me and said…”Nana…I can’t tell if this is Jesus or a Jedi.” For some reason that just totally cracked us both up and the more we laughed, the funnier it got. Joy…sheer joy. This is my reward for being puked on at 3:00am…for putting up with a sassy pants teenaged girl…for the pain of letting her grow and get married and move to the opposite end of the country. This. This sweet child and her sister.

Last night was dinner out with the other grandparents and a viewing of the first Harry Potter movie with popcorn. We “camped” in the driveway in TOW-Wanda. This morning is church with my girl. My heart is so full. ❤️

“Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.”

  1. Yes, I do believe that being a grandparent is our reward for having been a parent and going thru diapers, the miserable two’s, the teens and the temper tantrums 😉 Like you, I saw my “little” and “big” yesterday; 2 and 8. I’m lucky enough to see them more often as they live just an hour away. Blessings, pure blessings.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying your visit and I look forward to each day’s post!

  2. I have a sign at my house that states, “If Mommy says NO, ask Mimi. If Mimi says NO… Who are you kidding? Mimi NEVER says NO!
And, unless it involves something illegal or dangerous, Mimi never says NO! Like you, I kidnap them several times a year, for several days. Those moments keep me going! I pray that inside their hearts and minds, they can hold those memories and all the love I feel for them!
There is hope for the world in those moments spent with them!
Love each special time! Stay safe on your journey!

  3. I have a big and we started a tradition 5 years ago. We go to San Francisco on BART during the Christmas holidays. Several hotels have gingerbread houses on display! Some are very elaborate, some are big some are small. It’s a walking adventure to see what’s new are what has been added. After our tour we have lunch and sometimes it turns into dinner too! She also gets to buy one gift for herself and her BFF.
Sadly this year there will be no Gingerbread tour as my son moved to Ft.Worth Texas. After a12 year drought I now have two more grandchild and one more on the way! I hope to restart this tradition with the 2 who live near me. The bright side is my Big and I have made many memorie that we cherish❣️?

  4. What fun:) I hope to get to do things like this as mine get a bit older. We do fun things, but it’s more like going to library storytime when you have a 3 yr. old and a 5 yr. old. I get to see mine daily. I know I am very, very fortunate. (I babysit them:) I love your adventures and fun with these two young ladies;)

  5. I have spent the last three weeks with two of my six grands. Last year we developed ” Camp Grandma” with two weeks together. This year the fun continued! I only see my grands once or twice a year. They are scattered from Germany, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. I miss them so much! I just took my grands back to their Dad on Saturday. My “little” is seven. He is so full of life! Everything is so exciting to him. “Big” is thirteen and he is into video games and is somewhat more subdued. In the next month, we will see the other four grands. What a great summer!!
