I’m not a huge planner. I fly by the seat of my pants most of the time so when my niece texted early this week and said she had a three day weekend break from college, I’m like “Heck yeah, girlfriend…I’m there!” No matter that I left the farm at 9:30 and didn’t get to my niece’s sorority house till 6:30. I’m all about the trip!
Yesterday was our chance to go explore. We were going to go into Indianapolis, but at the very last minute decided to go to Louisville. We went to Nashville, Indiana first. Nashville is filled with block after block of small shops, galleries, artisans and restaurants. We arrived in Louisville in time to catch our breath and head to the Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner. We went out afterward to walk off all that pasta. We went down to the waterfront park and watched the sternwheeler take off. We were going to a blues festival but I was unsure about going into an unfamiliar neighborhood after dark when the only way in and out was with an Uber driver. Especially with a cute little 19 year old. We decided to head for 4th Street Live…a long stretch of restaurants and bars with live music in the square. On our way, my niece spotted a horse drawn carriage and shyly asked if we could do that. She’d never done it before. So, of course…we did, because I’m the cool aunt!
Spontaneity. Flexibility. The ability to enjoy the next thing that comes around the corner without having to map it all out. That’s the way I like to live my life. You never know what you might miss if you are too rigid in your planning. Seeing my niece’s face when I said we could take the carriage? Priceless! We’ll both remember this weekend…far more than any tchotchke I might have bought her for her high school graduation or Bat Mitzvah.
