Thank you for the Prayers!

They worked! Mr. FixIt felt MUCH better yesterday. He still didn’t eat a lot, but I got plenty of fluids in him and he had a big bowl of homemade Jewish penicillin (chicken soup) last night with a piece of cornbread hot out of the oven. He’s far from well, but he’s SO much better! I’m telling you, he scared me to death Wednesday night. He could hardly walk and I had to half carry him to the bedroom. He only kept the anti-viral down an hour, but I think enough got in him, along with the prayers, to help him turn the corner, so I am in your debt.

My test looked ever so slightly positive to me on Wednesday, but yesterday’s was absolutely negative. I still feel achy, but maybe it’s sympathy pains for my sweetheart. We didn’t do much of anything yesterday. I finished the pantry and cleaned up the kitchen from the mess. And that feels SO much better. I told Mr. FixIt, in order to keep it in this condition, we need to do one shopping trip a week…from a list. And if he stops to pick up things for me, he has to stick to the list. You see all those noodles up there on the second shelf? And all that cereal on the top shelf? Well, he’s incredibly helpful and when he stops at the store, he buys things that he thinks we might need. That’s how we get seven cans of corn and ten cans of green beans. lol

Since it’s organized, it surely makes cooking a lot easier. I went through the freezer on Tuesday, so we can actually use the food in there now and the items in the pantry are easily visible and accessible. When I went to the pharmacy on Wednesday night, I picked up some clear storage, vacuum sealed storage containers to keep from getting pantry moths again. As a person on the autism spectrum, I have a difficult time with organizing, but I get a wild hair from time to time and miracles happen!

I received my beautiful new cookbook yesterday. Celebrating Southern Appalachian Food by Jim Casada and Tipper Pressley is a treasure trove of folklore and foodways of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. West Virginia is on the northern end of that mountain chain, so many of the food terms were familiar to me. My Pop-Pop called a bottle of pop (soda) by an old timey term…dope. This stems from the days when Coca Cola had cocaine in it. When Grandma tasted something she really loved, she smiled and remarked it was larrupin’ good and licked her lips. Quantitative terms like mess , passel, pinch, scootch, sliver, smattering, smidgen, tad, and tetch were commonly used in our country kitchen. Reading the glossary took me back to my early days on the farm. Reading about eating “a mess of turnip greens and a pone for supper” had me dragging out my favorite iron skillet to make a pone (cornbread) of my own. Oh, the kitchen smelled wonderful and it was enough to stimulate Mr. FixIt’s appetite so he could eat a little something.

Nesting in the fall has me longing to cook and bake which I can still do while I’m watching my calories. I just need to make adjustments, eat smaller portions, and keep within my calorie budget. That’s what I love about Noom…there are NO bad foods. I truly can eat anything I want. Nothing is off limits. I just have to be smart about it. Yesterday, I hit a new low weight and have now lost 31.6 pounds. If you are interested in talking to me about Noom…or any other method of creating a sensible diet plan, just send me a private message. I can get you a code that will give you two free weeks and a reduced price. I’ve tried a dozen different weight loss plans, but Noom is the first that feels not only doable, but sustainable. I’m hopeful. And I’m feeling so much better…not counting the aches a pains of the last couple of days. Let’s hope I keep from getting “the ‘vid”.

I went out yesterday afternoon to pick some of the beautiful milkweed seed that I found when I was mowing. I spread some throughout both pollinator gardens and some along the perimeter of our fields. I’m hoping to keep building up my plants through gathering wild seed from the area…which is free.

Gotta love free stuff!

  1. Hi Ginny. I was reading your story on SOTF with your first Christmas time without your 1st husband & how Santa comforted you.
We are kinda neighbors, In just over the Stateline in Va & WVa near 1-81 & Strasburg, Woodstock, Edinburg, MT Jackson areas. And do know of so many of those Appalachian ways & terms. It’s surprising how they come to mind with something in the kitchen.
We share in the medical fields also. Semi retired now but continue to keep my license. Ginny Its Amazing all the things you have done & experienced.
Well I’m having a bout with covid now like your Mr Fixit. Prayers for us both & none of our church families to have worse times with it.
