When I was in Glenwood Springs this week, I met “The Girls” for coffee. This particular group of women have been meeting every Thursday for 30+ years. I joined them 15 years ago. They had their babies together, raised them, married them off, and became grandmothers over coffee and conversation. I sat back and listened as they discussed the upcoming marriage of yet another child. This particular daughter joined us. My oldest used to babysit for her and now she’s a doctor. Time. What a slippery thing it is.
After coffee, I joined another group of “Girls”. This one is a knitting group that meets in the home of my beautiful “other mother” to bring her some sunshine. She can’t get out like she used to. Here, she shows us her grandmother’s postage stamp quilt. Women. Beautiful, strong women who have lived beautiful lives. They were very excited by the kayak on top of the truck. As I left, they called out cheerily, “Enjoy your adventures!” I love that.
As I march steadily on the path between these two age groups I realize how blessed I am. And I wanted to thank someone special. I stopped in to the alternative high school. This haven saved my younger daughter’s life when she was bullied in high school. She never really fit in the mainstream and kids can be cruel. Sonja was her saving grace, her champion, her mentor. It was to Sonja that I gifted Mr. Virgo’s guitar and amp. I wanted to see her bright, shiny smile and tell her I love her.
Women. We are fragile yet strong, fallible yet indestructible. I am so proud of these women and happy to have them in my life.
