There’s a Fungus Among Us

I got back from my little impromptu camping trip in the early afternoon. It was already in the mid 80’s but as soon as I had the camper unhooked and set up, I hopped on the riding mower. I told you yesterday, with all this rain, you could HEAR the grass growing. I wasn’t kidding. It was amazing. But that wasn’t the only thing that grew fast…take a look at this mushroom!

I would bet money this thing wasn’t there Friday when I left for Huntington. If it was, it was very small. When I walked into the back gate, this thing was like “HEY…I’M HERE!!!!” I’ve posted it on my personal page as well as Twitter, so let’s see if we get a hit. Someone out there is bound to be a mushroom forager!

When I lived in England, Hubby #1 came home from work one day with a grocery sack FULL of mushrooms. They looked exactly like the white mushrooms you buy in the store. He said they were given to him by well trained mushroom foragers, and…since they weren’t red with white spots, and since I was a pretty young housewife on a budget, I fried them up in about a pound of butter. We sat down with a fork and ate every one of them…they were SO good. The differences between fresh food and store bought is staggering. I’ve never been brave enough since to eat a mushroom I’ve found. Now, I know what a morel mushroom looks like so you can guarantee if I ever find any of those…I’m eating them. Or selling them to a fine restaurant!

It was 88 degrees when I finally finished mowing the five acres. Mr. FixIt was using the push mower and the weed eater. We both finished at the same time. I went inside to change and jumped in the pool. We have struggled with algae all summer. Mr. FixIt treated the water with algaecide this week so there was a layer of sediment on the bottom. I vacuumed as much up as I could, then I used a broom to stir it all up and clean the sides of the pool. When I was done, the water was a dull murky greenish brown again so I added more algaecide. We didn’t have a bit of trouble last summer. But it was so hot and dry this year, and what we thought was algaecide…wasn’t. I think we’ve got a handle on it now…just in time to start thinking about closing the pool up for the season. Pools are an awful lot of work, but when you’ve been mowing for a few hours in the August heat, there’s nothing like a refreshing dip. And, since it’s been so rainy this week, the water was a great temperature.

Yesterday was one of those “just do the next thing” days. Mr. FixIt and I work very well together as a team. We just start working. And whatever we’re doing just seems to work in tandem till the job is done. I’ve never really had a relationship like this. Hubby #1 and I weren’t together long enough to have a place to work on together. Hubby #2 was a doctor. He mowed the lawn in our later years together, but I did the gardening and planting, building, painting, etc. He was always too busy. Mr. Virgo, God rest his soul, was NOT handy with tools. He got on a kick one time and decided to refinish the night stands in our room to match a new bedroom suite he bought. When those turned out pretty well, he decided to refinish my mother’s cedar chest. He used a combination stain and varnish kind of thing and when he was finished, you couldn’t open the chest! It was the thought that counts and it made a nice bench.

And now…I have Mr. FixIt. He doesn’t get that name for nuthin! He can do ANYTHING. He’s so handy and creative and fun to work with. On occasion we butt heads because I want things done MY way way and he wants them HIS. I almost always back off and learn there’s more than one way to get a job done and I don’t ALWAYS have to be right! I love it when life is fun and hard jobs are made easier with a willing partner.
