I love live music. I love listening to groups I have never heard and discovering something new through their music. The other day it was Rage Against the Machine with Killing in the Name Of. Wednesday night it was SHEL, a group consisting of four sisters with their tremendous harmonies that you commonly find in siblings. They are quirky, fun, and delightfully different. Last night it was Biff Gore who was on Season 6 of The Voice with a great dance band. Dancing to live music is liberating. It releases something primal in us. We become the hunter/gatherers around the campfire seeking community with those around us. We get lost in the rhythm of our people. It’s joyful. It plants our feet on the earth. We step out of our comfort zone of the treadmill we’re on and join in.
I was chatting with a longtime friend the other night and she shared a post with me from T. D. Jakes Ministries. In it, the pastor is giving a commencement address about stepping out of your comfort zone. He said before anything great can be achieved, your comfort zone must be disturbed. The friend that shared this uses a Segway for mobility. She is an inspiration in that she gets up and moves on when others would have sat down in a wheelchair long ago. Now she is being asked to speak in front of high school groups about continuing on in the face of adversity. She’s scared to death to speak in front of people. But she recognizes this as a God thing. She is being called to a higher purpose so she’s reaching down deep and giving that comfort zone a mighty twist.
Right on, KD! Even a caged bird sings.
