We’re Off to See The Wizard

We had some pretty fierce spring thunder boomers come through here yesterday. I was out in the Big Birdhouse chatting with my dear friend Gail when a notification came across my phone. We were under a tornado watch from 1:30-10:00 last night. Severe thunderstorm warnings with possible quarter sized hail and winds up to 75mph. Wowza! I quickly gathered up my stuff, dropped the top on the camper, and hightailed it inside.

I have to say, I absolutely love thunderstorms. I remember as a kid in grade school, the windows in the classroom were huge because the building was really old. (It had the wooden desks with inkwells, so that tells you how old I am!) I remember the cozy feeling when the sky would get really dark in the middle of the day and the rain would come in sheets, beating against the wavy glass windows. The old milk glass globes on the lights that hung overhead cast an eerie glow to the scene.

Thunderstorms are different here in WV than they are in Colorado. They’re bigger and darker and louder. You’ve heard Garth Brooks sing about how the thunder rolls? Well, that’s what it does here. The windows shake. Sometimes car alarms are set off. You can hear a storm coming from far off. And they travel fast, too. They pack a lot of wind and knock trees down over power lines and interfere with your satellite. I wish we had a big porch with a roof that I could go out and sit to watch the storms when they roll through.

The worst of the storms passed by the time I sat down to write this last night around 8:30. I had the windows wide open and could hear the spring peepers serenading the little girl frogs. Water dripped off the edge of the roof into a little groove in the ground that matches the edge of the roofline. We had so much rain last night, there was standing water in the yard.

I was supposed to go to join my camping friends today for four days of crafting fun, but poor Gail was sick with the flu this week and we all decided it was best to postpone. We have been so careful during the pandemic, we haven’t had so much as a cold, so I would really hate to get sick at this point. Fortunately, she is over it now, but better to be safe than sorry, right?

I noticed the other night, the refrigerator isn’t working well in the brand new camper. I’ve unplugged it to give it a chance to thaw out just in case it’s frozen like air conditioners can do. It’s going to be really chilly the next few days, then we’ll be back to good weather next week. If the fridge doesn’t start working correctly, we’ll need to take it in to get fixed. It’s always something, isn’t it?

I was the bird whisperer again yesterday when another little male downy woodpecker hit our window. I finally put the stickers up that I bought. My son-in-law’s mom says they work great for her, so hopefully I won’t walk out to find stunned birds on the stoop. We had a rainbow that ended right on our road. I think I’ve found the pot of gold…don’t you?

“As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.”

Ezekiel 1:28 KJV
