Our new pollinator spaces are already producing native wildflowers!
Land’s sake…Mr. FixIt and I can’t hear each other more and more often these days. Remember that time we went on a road trip and we’d pass people who were weaving on the road? He’d say, “Yep…he’s a Texan!” I couldn’t figure out how he knew that or why Texans are such poor drivers. Finally I passed someone and I saw for sure they weren’t from Texas…they were from New York. So, when he said, “Yep…he’s a Texan.” I turned to him and said, “Gotcha…he is not! He’s from New York!” He looked at me puzzled and said, “What are you talking about?” I said, “Well, every time we pass someone weaving, you announce he’s a Texan.” He started laughing and said, “Textin’! He’s a textin’!” We laughed our butts off over that one!
Most of the time it’s not at all important and we finally figure it out, between hearing loss and Appalachian phrases. We had a long day mowing yesterday and were taking a break in the shade of the maple tree.
“When we get this mowing finished, you wanna go in and have a salad for supper?
“Sure.” I said…even though I’ve had way too much salad this week. Then he mentioned we needed more paper plates. I told him we had some in the camper. Then we went on with our mowing. I finished before he did and went in to take a most welcome shower. I took a couple of pieces of salmon out earlier to thaw, so newly washed and cooled off, I set to cooking supper. I decided to have a proper meal and make baked salmon, quinoa, green beans, and the leftover salad from last night.
Mr. FixIt came in and looked at me working in the kitchen.
“What are you doing?”
“Well, I decided instead of salad we’d have a cooked meal tonight so I’m putting the salmon in the oven.”
“I thought you wanted to go out to dinner?”
“I’m sorry…what?”
“I asked you if you wanted to go out for salad after we finished mowing and you said yes.”
“No…you asked if I wanted to go in for salad after we finished mowing.”
“I said “IN”…meaning “in to town for salad.”
“Oh, my gosh! I totally didn’t get that from what you said. But now I have this great piece of salmon ready to cook. We can go tomorrow night if you want salad in town.”
He just shook his head. I know now he meant to take me out so I didn’t have to cook, but honestly? I’d much rather have a home cooked meal than to go out. And after his shower and his yummy salmon, he was pretty darned glad we didn’t go “in to town for salad.”
It got really hot yesterday…in the 80’s. I mowed slathered with 70 spf sunscreen and carrying my golf umbrella. It took a little bit longer to mow around the new pollinator gardens, but they’re going to be worth it when they’re grown up and developed. When I got closer, I could see native wildflowers popping their little heads up in the grasses. It was so pretty. And my little patch of buttercups are still blooming. Now I have the best of both worlds…the beautiful groomed fields with big free form pollinator areas. I can see more beauty in our future!

Sometimes words are hard to find when comforting a bereaved friend or relative. I know when I lost Mr. Virgo, I craved soft fuzzy blankies. Here’s a beautiful sunset I found and thought it would be perfect with a Scripture on it. Feel free to send the link to others who may need just the right gift for such a time.
