Standing at the Foot of the Temporary Back Steps
I can’t remember the last time I actually took the whole day off. When we prepared for bed on Tuesday night, I told Little we were taking the day off and to feel free to sleep in. That we did. Poor kid keeps saying anytime we go someplace here, it’s a mini road trip. She isn’t far off. I didn’t cook breakfast…we fended for ourselves. Little packed for the camping trip, read and played with makeup all day. I pulled out my laptop and external hard drive and looked for old pictures of the farm. I want to make a memory book for the family. And I want to share some of the old photos with the new owners.
It’s been really interesting going through the pictures and trying to get an idea of the timeline. Some of the snapshots had dates printed on the border to indicate when they were developed, but most did not. I believe I have found the oldest photo of Grandma’s house that I have in my possession…and it is SO cool! I found a bunch of pictures that show the house before it was moved onto the new basement. I have memories of that, but had no idea how old I was. I found a couple of pictures of me taken right after they rolled the house onto the new foundation. I don’t believe we were there when it was actually being moved because it wasn’t safe to have littles around.
It’s also been interesting to go through these photos and “feel” my family and what they must have been feeling at the time photos were taken. There were happy times like large family gatherings. And there were sad times like the somber, haunted faces staring into the camera documenting the loss of my Uncle Sonny. He was an Air Force pilot and crashed in Germany in 1955. I was almost two. I often wondered if there were any pictures of him holding me. I found a letter where he asked my mom how she was doing and had I arrived yet. And I also found him holding a baby that looks to be about two or three months old. I’m trying to put times and faces and ages together to figure out if it’s me. I’m hoping my uncle can help me figure it out. Once Little goes back with her mom and sister to Colorado, I want to get over to my uncle’s house for a visit.
Little and I leave today to go camping for two days and we are SO excited. We are meeting a few of my camping friends, and we’ll do some crafts and things.
